  3. oil-drilling bit, he created a legendary
  4. financial empire. A skilled pilot, he
  5. manufactured and designed aircraft. He formed
  6. a film company in Hollywood and made the
  7. classic film Hell's Angels 1930, about
  8. aviators of World War I; later successes
  9. included Scarface 1932 and The Outlaw 1943.
  10. Flying a plane of his own design, he set
  11. world speed records. Hughes Tool Company
  12. became a major defence contractor during
  13. World War II, increasing his fortune. He
  14. invested heavily in Nevada real estate,
  15. especially in Las Vegas. He was known for
  16. dating glamorous movie stars, but from his
  17. middle years he was a recluse.
